New banknotes for Lai See available for exchange starting mid-January
HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China said on Thursday that new banknotes will be available for exchange starting mid-January for the public to prepare Lai See, or red packets, for the Chinese New Year.
Citizens can exchange new banknotes or used notes in good condition at branches of these three note-issuing banks from January 13 to 21, 2022.
To facilitate a smooth exchange process, the branches of the three banks will open earlier, at 8am between January 13 and 15, 2022. The first opening hour will provide the notes exchange service exclusively.
An online booking service will be available starting January 8, 2022. Measures like distributing physical tickets or implementing queue management will also be adopted when necessary.
The Monetary Authority reminded citizens to check for any remaining stock of new notes or good-as-new notes at home before going to a bank.
“Also, there is no need to rush exchanging for new notes and good-as-new notes during the first few days of the service period as banks will ensure the supply of these notes throughout the service period,” according to the Authority.
On another note, the Authority encouraged the public to give Lai See through electronic channels like the Faster Payment System via online or mobile banking.
Major banks and electronic payment operators will also encourage giving electronic Lai See by various promotional programs, it added.
