Netizens slam Uber for increasing fares when train services suspended
Netizens were enraged when they found out the fares of hiring a car or taxi through the Uber app were raised to over HK$1,100 on Thursday evening after train services were suspended.
A door set of a train at Causeway Bay MTR station flew off last night around 6pm during peak hours, affecting a massive crowd of citizens who just got off from work.
A netizen slammed Uber for raising the fares for hiring a car or taxi after the suspension on forum LIHKG, with a phone screenshot showing that he would be charged HK$543.31 for a ride from Taikoo Place in Quarry Bay to Yau Yue Wan Village in Tseung Kwan O.
Other netizens soon joined and shared similar experiences they encountered last night.
One netizen shocked others by posting a screenshot, indicating he would be charged HK$1,128.59 for hiring an Uber taxi to travel from Admiralty to Tin Chak Estate in Tsin Shui Wai. When entering the exact same pickup location and destination on Friday afternoon, the Uber app said the ride would be charging between HK$389.1 and HK$404.
Another one posted a screenshot, saying he would be charged HK$341.85 for a ride from Causeway Bay to Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui. He even wrote on the photo that “I thought my eyes deceived me.”
Many others criticized Uber and said increasing fares made the company no different from taxi drivers who increased the rate as they wanted.
Yet some defended Uber and said the price constantly fluctuates depending on the supply and demand chain and increasing the rate amid heavy traffic is a usual practice.
According to the website of Uber, it said fares will increase via surge pricing if there are more rider requests than available drivers.
