Nearly 60 pc of Hongkongers think light public housing is costly
A recent study conducted by the Democratic Party showed that more than 60 percent of the public thought the cost of the Light Public Housing (LPH) units was "beyond" the units' sustainability.
The Party conducted a phone interview among 800 Hongkongers in the past month and found that around 60 percent agreed the cost of LPH units was too high, which is already reaching the same as traditional public housing flats.
"Besides, more than half of the respondents were aware that the LPH units will be demolished after five years, saying that was not cost-effective," said the Party in a press conference on Thursday.
The respondents added that the government should put resources into building more traditional public housing instead of issuing temporary measures to solve the housing problem.
In addition, the Party said about 40 percent would still move into LPH units even though it lacks community facilities or transportation infrastructures.
Under the government's blueprint, the LPH units project will take eight premises across the city to construct 30,000 LPH units in five years with a total of HK$14.9 billion in cost to tackle the long waiting time for traditional public housing units.
Officials earlier guaranteed that eight locations used for LPH would only be occupied for five years and returned to their original uses afterward, especially the place in Kai Tak for its initial plan as a commercial zone.
