National Games comes to a close

National Games comes to a close

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor will attend the closing ceremony of the 14th National Games tonight after visiting local athletes in the National Games Village in Xi'an, Shaanxi.
Over 100 Hong Kong athletes participated in the games, with a haul of two gold and five bronze medals.

Cyclist Lee Sze-wing won the last gold for the city in the Women's Individual (Road Cycling) event yesterday.

Secretary for Home Affairs Caspar Tsui Ying-wai said he was thrilled by Lee's victory, while the president of the Legislative Council Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen congratulated local athletes on achieving excellent results.

Lam traveled from Chongqing to Xi'an and met with some 20 Hong Kong track and field athletes.

Long jumper Chan Ming-tai told Lam: "The number of track and field coaches in Hong Kong is not as high as other sports or in foreign countries. The entire Hong Kong team has [up to 200 people] and there are only two full-time coaches.

Chan added: "There isn't a complete coaching system to cultivate young people." Lam responded that she would look into it.

Lam also told the press that she will strive for more competitions to be held in Hong Kong during the next 2025 National Games, which will be cohosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

"Four years later, Hong Kong's facilities will be more abundant. Kai Tak sports park will be established and will have a stadium that fits in 50,000 people."

The government is also studying the possibility of purchasing the broadcast rights for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

She added that some Hongkongers' unfamiliarity with the National Games may be because national education has yet to do well.

Lam will attend the closing ceremony of the National Games tonight and join the National Games flag handover ceremony with the leaders of Guangdong and Macau.
