Several doors of an MTR train were ripped off as it derailed while entering Yau Ma Tei station yesterday morning, disrupting rail services between Lai King and Jordan Station for the whole day.

Tony Lee Kar-yun, Operations Director of the MTR, said in a radio programme today that the metal component of the guardrail ventilation system next to the platform was found misplaced, which is believed to lead the train to drift off the track.

"Our staff have inspected more than 30 metal guardrail installations on the network of MTR lines across the city after the incident," he said, "in order to ensure the normal operations of trains today."

At least 700 passengers were evacuated from the scene yesterday. Sammy Wong Kwan-wai, Chief of Operating and Metro Segment of MTR, said at the same programme that two train carriages reached the platform while the remaining six were still in the tunnel when the incident happened.

"The passengers were later evacuated via the platform and the ramp of the train, with the guidance of MTR staff, to safe places."
