Mother challenges murder suspect to meet her outside govt HQ
A mother challenged Chan Tong-kai, the suspect who allegedly killed her daughter Poon Hiu-wing in Taiwan, to meet her outside government headquarters this Wednesday.
She said she will prepare a phone for Chan to call Taiwanese authorities and surrender himself.
Poon, 20, was killed in Taiwan in 2018 during a trip with Chan. Her body was later found in a suitcase.
As there is no extradition treaty between Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chan was released from jail after he finished a sentence for laundering Poon's money.
He lived in a safe house provided by Hong Kong police until June this year, and has since lived in a remote part of the city.
Although Chan promised to give himself up to Taiwanese authorities, it has yet to happen.
On Monday, Poon's mother released a voice recording on an online radio, calling upon Chan, his father and Reverend Peter Koon Ho-ming to meet her outside the government headquarters to talk it out.
She also requested the presence of Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung, police commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee, and lawmakers Starry Lee Wai-king and Holden Chow Ho-ding from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong party.
Chan has almost spent two years out of prison, and the case should not drag on, she said.
Koon, who has been the middleman between Chan and the media, said he will not attend the meeting, and added that Taiwanese authorities have not agreed on issuing a visa for Chan to go to Taiwan.
Tang said Chan has already finished the jail term for the offense he committed in Hong Kong, and that many murderers live normal lives after they are released from prison, so Chan is now a free man.
The Security Bureau will not play a middleman to facilitate a meeting between the mother and Chan. Whether Chan meets her or not is not something that can be regulated by law, he said.
