More restaurants ready to receive mainland group tourists
An updated list of "restaurants willing to accept tour groups" was recently issued to travel agencies by the Travel Industry Authority (TIA).
The list features 16 Chinese-style restaurants and cha chaan tengs with prices ranging from HK$60 to HK$120 - most of which are in To Kwa Wan and Hung Hom - as well as food courts of four retail plazas with prices ranging from HK$40 to HK$240.
The food court management companies announced to the TIA their intention to receive tourists from the mainland and will separate an area for the group tours, which the travel agencies can reserve via telephone.
A cha chaan teng owner, surnamed Chu, said that outside of lunch hours, the current flow of diners is average, and she plans to arrange for the tourists to be seated at different times to have their meals.
She also pointed out that the catering industry is in its harshest period, and it is hard for them to recover fully. She hopes that more sources of customers can be found and would be okay with setting their meal price range between HK$40 and HK$55 as long as it attracts more customers.
Chu also hopes to receive tourists for the long term, but no tourist agency is currently working with her.
The Travel Industry Council estimates about 600,000 tourists will visit Hong Kong during the upcoming Golden Week holidays (Apr 29 to May 3).
