Eight Hongkongers who were jailed in Shenzhen after a failed attempt trying to flee to Taiwan by speedboat were expected to be handed over to Hong Kong police today after completing their prison sentences.
At around 10am, several seven-seaters with drawn curtains crossed the border at Shenzhen Bay and headed straight towards the Tin Shui Wai Divisional Police Station, along with the traffic police escorts.
Some of the former detainees were believed to be in the cars, while others could possibly return later in the day.
According to reports, Andy Li Yu-hin was the first to arrive at the police station.
Li and the seven others – Cheng Tsz-ho, Cheung Chun-fu, Cheung Ming-yu, Yim Man-him, Lee Tsz-yin, Kok Tsz-lun and Wong Wai-yin will return to Hong Kong in four batches. They will first arrive at the police station and will be handed over to the Department of Health to undergo a 14-day quarantine.
It's understood that the police’s national security department will take over the group's cases.
The Yantian People's Court in Shenzhen earlier sentenced the eight to prison for seven months and fined them 10,000 yuan each for illegally crossing the border following a closed-door trial.
They were among 12 Hongkongers who were caught by the Guangdong coast guard in August last year.
While Tang Kai-yin and Quinn Moon, who were sentenced to three years and two years in jail respectively, will remain in Shenzhen to finish their prison terms.
Earlier, two minor within the group of twelve - Hoang Lam-phuc and Liu Tsz-man, were returned to the Hong Kong police in December last year after Shenzhen authorities decided not to prosecute them.
Among the group, 11 had been facing prosecution in Hong Kong in connection with anti-government protests, while one had been arrested, but not charged, under the national security law.
One of the two earlier returnees was subsequently charged with failing to surrender to custody, while prosecutors told a court that the other teenager could be charged with absconding.
