A new political party composed mainly of mainland immigrants will field one candidate in the New Territories North constituency of the Legislative Council elections on December 19.
New Prospect for Hong Kong announced yesterday that engineer Gary Zhang Xin-yu, who is an executive member of the organization, will run in the elections.
Zhang said he has secured sufficient nominations, citing prominent figures such as top microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung of the University of Hong Kong and former chief executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Charles Li Xiaojia.
Also nominating him were executive director of CK Asset Holdings Justin Chiu Kwok-hung and chief executive of MTR Corp Jacob Kam Chak-pui.
Zhang believes his sincerity could be an asset, as proven when he took to social media to respond to online questions regarding the August 31 incident at Prince Edward station during the anti-fugitive bill unrest in 2019. Zhang was the manager of the MTR station when the police entered the station to look for protesters, and he was moved by the fact that people chose to believe what he said - especially in such a politically divided climate.
He said his party doesn't just represent a small group of people and should be regarded as being on neither side of the political spectrum as it considers the interests of Hong Kong as a whole.
Also expected to run in the same constituency are Edward Lau Kwok-fan, from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, and Yuen Long district council chairman Shum Ho-kit.
Twelve more candidates submitted nominations yesterday.
DAB member Rock Chen Chung-nin, chairman of Pacific Falcon Investment Group, and Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions chairman Lam Chun-sing handed in their nominations to run in the Election Committee constituency.
