Mentally unstable gambler sentenced to 6 months rehab for pushing woman onto tracks
A 34-year-old goods truck driver, who has mental issues, was sentenced to be detained in a drug addiction treatment center for six months as he pushed a woman onto light-rail tracks, saying he felt angry after losing money on the horses.
Yau Chun-lok, the defendant, faced his sentence in the District Court on Wednesday as he earlier pleaded guilty to an allegation of assault.
He admitted that he had pushed the female victim, surnamed Hsiu, off the tracks on the Light Rail’s Tai Hing (North) Stop in Tuen Mun on November 28, 2021.
Yau further claimed he was upset at the time due to having lost on horse betting when the victim and her boyfriend passed by. He thought the woman was sneering at him and pushed her left shoulder, leading her to fall off the platform on to the tracks.
According to the court, the female was injured on her head, right elbow, and knees before being rescued by her boyfriend. The duo attempted to stop the defendant, but he denied that he pushed Hsiu and claimed she "fell by herself" before running away.
The court also learned that Yau has had overdose episodes as he started to take drugs when he was 22 years old, and psychiatric history since age 12.
Given the defendant’s mental conditions, Deputy District Judge Amy Chan Wai-mun ruled, and the victims had only suffered minor injuries, the defendant was sentenced to be detained in the drug addiction treatment center for six months.
