Man hospitalized after jumping out of moving taxi over relationship quarrel
A 21-year-old man was sent to the hospital in a conscious state after he opened the door, jumped out of a moving taxi, and rolled onto Tsing Kwai Highway following an argument with his girlfriend early Saturday.
The incident occurred around 6 am this morning as the couple boarded a taxi to travel from Tsim Sha Tsui to Tsuen Wan.
They argued over relationship issues, and the young man named Lai suddenly opened the taxi door while traveling on the highway near Kwai Tsing Container Terminals.
The 24-year-old girlfriend named Yu immediately stopped Lai, and the 59-year-old driver Fung also hit the brakes to slow down the vehicle.
As Fung tried to cut into the slow lane on the far left from the middle driving lane, Lai again opened the door and successfully jumped out of the car this time. He rolled onto the road and sustained an injury to his head and scratches to his body. Still, he remained conscious.
According to a dashcam video circulated online, Yu, in tears, was seen holding Lai and checking how he was doing. Fung called the police and instructed other drivers to bypass them.
Police and paramedics later arrived and sent Lai to Princess Margaret Hospital. Officers are also investigating the cause of the incident.
The case was first listed as a traffic incident and now a suicide attempt.
