Man directing a kidnap of himself arrested for wasteful employment of police officers
The 20-year-old man in debt "directed" a kidnap of himself, asking for a ransom of HK$300,000 from his family. The prank was later exposed and he was arrested for wasteful employment of police officers.
Police received a report from a woman on Friday afternoon that she had received a phone call claiming her son had been kidnapped and demanding a ransom of HK$300,000.
The woman later received several clips of her son being attacked and called the police.
The Kowloon West police took over the investigation and launched a rescue operation. The 20-year-old man surnamed Mak was eventually rescued in Kowloon City on the same day with minor injuries.
During the operation, the police arrested two men aged 20 and 23 suspected of false imprisonment.
The police tried to stop a private car involved during the operation, but it fled at a high speed. The car repeatedly violated the traffic lights, crashed into another vehicle at the junction of Waterloo Road and Boundary Street and drove away.
The case was listed as furious driving and no one has been arrested yet.
After further investigation, police officers suspected that the man falsely claimed a kidnapping to his family for money due to debt issues.
He was arrested on Saturday in Kowloon City on suspicion of wasteful employment of police officers.
All the arrested are now detained for investigation. The operation is still underway.
Under the Criminal Procedure Ordinance, a person who causes any wasteful employment of the police by knowingly making to any person a false report shall be guilty of an offense and liable on conviction to a fine of HK$2,000 and 6 months in jail.
