Man charged after bribing driving examiner for getting a pass with HK$2,000
A 60-year-old man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to an allegation of bribing a driving examiner with HK$2,000 to get a pass after making a mistake at a road driving test of the Transport Department.
Defendant Lai Cheung-ming appeared at the Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Courts today over his charge of offering an advantage to a public servant.
The court learned that Lai had attended a road driving test at the Transport Department’s Yau Tong Driving Test Centre on July 9 this year and was examined by a Driving Examiner II.
During the test, Lai made a driving mistake and then offered “tea money” of HK$2,000 in cash to the examiner in a bid to secure a pass.
The examiner immediately turned down the offer and reported the incident to the Transport Department right after the test. The Independent Commission Against Corruption officers arrested the defendant on the same day.
Magistrate Minnie Wat Lai-man scheduled the sentencing of Lai to January 3 next year, awaiting a report of Community Service Orders upon the defendant. He was also granted bail in cash.
