Man arrested for robbing homeless woman of HK$16,000 and mobile phone
Police have arrested a 28-year-old non-ethnic Chinese man in connection with a robbery that saw an elderly street-sleeper being robbed of a waist pouch containing HK$16,000 and a mobile phone.
The force said the man was arrested on Wednesday outside of his residence, while officers have seized clothing he allegedly wore at the time of the incident.
The police spokesman said they have also learned about the identity of another suspect involved in the incident, and will not rule out the possibility of making further arrests.
It is understood that the alleged robbery on August 22 saw two bicycle-riding robbers snatching a waist pouch containing HK$16,000 and a mobile phone from an elderly street-sleeper in the early hours that day.
The 74-year-old woman was sitting on a flight of staircases outside Kowloon City Plaza sorting out used cardboard at the junction of Lion Rock Road and Carpenter Road in Kowloon City shortly before 3am, when the two men approached her.
Sources said one of the suspects sat next to the victim talking to her and stole her waist bag while the other man approached from behind and covered her mouth with his hand to stop her from yelling for help.
The two black-clad robbers then fled on bicycles. According to the force, the suspects are both thought to be aged about 30.
The elderly woman, who was unhurt in the incident, went to a nearby convenience store on Lion Rock Road to seek help from an employee who made a police report.
