Man arrested for allegedly stealing Chinese influencer’s bike in Mong Kok
A 45-year-old man was arrested on Friday for a theft in which a bike belonging to a Chinese influencer – which he has been riding across 32 provinces for over three years – was stolen in Mong Kok.
The man surnamed Wu was arrested on suspicion of theft on Tung Choi Street in Mong Kok around 9.30pm yesterday (Fri) and was remanded in custody.
Police have yet to locate the bike, while sources said Wu had sold the bike in Sham Shui Po.
“I have been riding across 32 Chinese provinces for over three years, and my bike was never stolen. I can’t imagine that it is now stolen in Hong Kong,” the 31-year-old influencer Guan Xiqiu said in a video uploaded on Thursday.
According to the police report filed by Guan, his bike was last locked to a fence between Argyle Street and Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok.
“I am very glad [about the arrest], but the police haven’t called me yet. I really want to find my bike and give it a spin on Hong Kong Island,” he said.
Guan has over a million followers on Douyin – the Chinese version of TikTok, and says he is in his 30s, despite his look, which appears to be more senior.
Earlier in an exclusive interview with Sing Tao Probe – a new online series covering social injustice, bizarre events, and light-hearted stories in the community – he displayed a home return permit to show that he was born in 1992.
He also thanked the production crew’s invitation to lunch at a traditional Chinese teahouse, one of Hong Kong’s signature cuisines.
