A 35-year-old mainlander is recovering in the hospital after attempting to kill himself by slashing open his abdomen with a fruit knife at his Tseung Kwan O home, due to the stress of being stranded in the city without a job.
The two-way permit holder, Mui, was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.
On Wednesday night, Mui was dining with his wife in their Park Central apartment on Tong Tak Street, during which his wife tried in vain to stop him from drinking too much, sources said.
At around 11pm that night, Mui staggered to the bathroom where he stabbed his stomach with a 25-centimeter fruit knife.
Terrified, the wife sought help from her neighbors. They managed to disarm Mui who was rushed to the hospital.
After using an exit-entry permit in 2019 to visit his Hong Kong wife, he had been stranded in the city due to the pandemic, sources said. Mui had told them he was frustrated over his inability to find a job and his financial reliance on his wife.
The case has been classified as an attempted suicide by the police, and is the second suicide attempt involving a knife within a month.
On October 14, a 71-year-old man died after plunging a knife into his chest at his Tsuen Wan home in Serenade Cove on Castle Peak Road.
The man was certified dead at Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan. He left no suicide note.
And on July 15, a 90-year-old elderly man was hospitalized after trying to slash open his abdomen with a utility knife and a pair of scissors at his home in Tsui Ping Estate, Kwun Tong. The man was said to have been troubled by illnesses, and was rushed to United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong.
