Sources said on Tuesday that mainland tour groups in Hong Kong could be arranged to have meals at sea, as the city’s catering sector struggled to offer affordable options to accommodate a surge in visitors from across the border.
The move came amid complaints that a number of budget tour groups from the mainland have overcrowded streets while queuing up outside restaurants, causing disturbances to residents living nearby.
Kwok, a general manager of a travel agency receiving the budget tour groups, said today that they were planning to arrange for the groups to have meals on a dining cruise - Bauhinia.
He said the agency had four to six such tour groups every day, each consisting of around 40 people. He also said they will first arrange for half of the tour group members to have their meals on Bauhinia
Kwok estimated that the meal cost will be increased by HK$1,000 each day, with the extra cost paid by the travel agency.
He added that the Bauhinia could accommodate 400 people at the same time, but the travel agency must make reservations in advance or else the tour groups will continue to dine in places like To Kwa Wan or Hung Hom.
