Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will visit Shenzhen and Guangzhou next Wednesday and Thursday, where he is expected to discuss border reopening with mainland officials, sources said.
In his first mainland visit as the SAR's leader, Lee is said to be heading to Shenzhen Wednesday afternoon in a closed-loop system.
He will then head to Guangzhou Thursday morning to attend an opening ceremony for Minxin School, founded by former chief executive Leung Chun-ying for the children of Hongkongers.
After that he will host another opening ceremony for Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Guangzhou campus in Nansha.
He will then return to Shenzhen to meet with mainland officials for border reopening talks in the afternoon before returning to the SAR.
Lee led SAR officials to Shenzhen to discuss quarantine-free travel last December, but the plan was put on hold due to the outbreak of the fifth wave of
Covid in Hong Kong.
Early last month, Lee held a meeting over phone with party secretary for Guangdong province Li Xi, governor Wang Weizhong, as well as party secretary for Shenzhen Meng Fanli and mayor Qin Weizhong to brief them about the SAR government's plans.
Hong Kong yesterday reported 7,884 infections - 7,677 local and 207 from overseas.
The Centre for Health Protection reported clusters in nine elderly and six disabled homes.
Separately, Hong Kong has increased the daily quota for the Come2hk Scheme from 1,000 to 1,500 for mainland travelers arriving via Shenzhen Bay Port.
