One of the last ships belonging to Genting Hong Kong’s Star Cruises last week arrived in India to be scrapped, bringing an end to an illustrious 30-year career as one of the city’s favorite cruise ships.
As of 22 hours ago (July 12), Star Pisces signaled her location just off the coast of Alang, India, on her way to the largest shipbreakers on the planet, where she will be dismantled and scrapped, according to cruisehive.com.
When Genting Hong Kong went out of business in early 2022, so did Star Cruises, and as a result, all the ships in its fleet, including Superstar Aquarius, SuperStar Gemini, and Star Pisces, were sold for scrap.
Star Pisces was constructed in 1989 at the Masa shipyards in Turku, Finland. Her first owner, Rederi AB Slite, shuttered in early 1993 when Star Cruises bought the vessel and converted it to be used as a cruise ship in Asia.
The ship sailed her first cruise from Singapore in April 1994, after which the vessel spent the rest of her lifetime making short day and night cruises from Hong Kong. She was especially popular for her casino cruises.
When Genting Hong Kong went bankrupt earlier in the year, the Star Pisces never sailed again except for her final journey to the scrapyard, drawing the curtain on an exemplary 30 years of service.
