The Hong Kong Secretary for Justice, Paul Lam, is calling for caution regarding a candlelight vigil at Victoria Park on June 4th to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
Lam stated that citizens should adhere to the law and understand the importance of protecting national security, as there are restrictions on inciting subversion and secession under the national security law.
The June 4th Vigil has not been held for the past three years due to the
Covid social gathering ban and the disbanding of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China in 2021.
Three of the alliance's core leaders were charged with subversion.
During an antechamber session at Legco, other government officials addressed questions regarding the removal of books authored by pro-democracy politicians from public libraries and the Belt and Road initiative.
