Knife-wielding man jumps to his death before abseiling firefighters reach him
Abseiling firefighters failed to rescue a knife-wielding man in Sham Shui Po as he climbed onto a clothing rack and jumped to his death on Tuesday morning.
Police received a report at 9.02am on Tuesday morning, saying that an emotional man in a flat at Fu Loy House in Fu Cheong Estate threw his clothes and other objects down onto the streets. He also wielded a knife and broke the window frames.
The man then climbed out of the window as firefighters broke into the flat. Police also sent negotiators to the scene and tried to calm the man, who walked along a narrow ledge outside the window and sat on the clothing rack for about two hours.
Although a rescue cushion was set up on the ground, the man jumped off the canopy around 11am when he spotted two firefighters abseiling down from the upper floors, trying to reach him.
The man then fell to a podium on the first floor, where rescuers certified him dead.
Police later confirmed the man was surnamed Lee and aged 63, adding that he had records of mental disorder. Officers didn't find a suicide note at the scene and said the investigation is still ongoing.
