About three in every five government lawyers are female, said Secretary for Justice Paul Lam Ting-kwok as he seized the opportunity to pay his respect to these ladies and wish them “forever 18” on International Women’s Day.
Lam said each and every one of these female lawyers is smart, attentive to details, and possesses flawless debating skills. They have also been advising and contributing ideas to the government and the Department of Justice.
“Hong Kong has always seen more male lawyers than female lawyers, but the ‘tables turned’ in 2021 for the first time, with the percentage of female lawyers standing at 51 percent.
“The figure remained at the same level in 2022 as female lawyers continued to become the ‘majority’ of the legal sector,” Lam wrote on
Facebook Wednesday.
The justice chief also pointed out that about 30 percent of barristers are female, and there are 13 senior counsels among the city’s total of 102.
“Women are in no way any less than men when it comes to paving and protecting the path to justice,” Lam also said.
Lam wished all women who work hard to contribute to society and provide for their families “forever 18” on International Women’s Day.
Meanwhile, chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu also posted on
Facebook a photo of him alongside six female secretaries and officials in his cabinet.
“All female colleagues I have worked with, for instance, demonstrate great capability, tenacity, and determination in performing their duties and making considerable contributions to society,” Lee said.
The city leader called on society to support and assist women, especially those going through stressful and difficult situations, to help them balance job and family commitments and unleash their potential.
