An alliance that organized the annual June 4 vigil will officially disband, after the majority of its members voted to pass the disbandment motion in a meeting this afternoon.
The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China held a special members meeting this afternoon to decide the fate of the group. The meeting was emceed by secretary Richard Choi Yiu cheong and was held at the June 4th Museum in Mong Kok.
Members first paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the June 4 Tiananmen massacre and volunteers who have passed away, before proceeding to the voting.
Forty-one members voted in favor of disbanding the alliance, while four voted against the motion.
Choi and chairman Lee Cheuk-yan's wife Elizabeth Tang Yin-ngor were appointed as liquidators of the alliance.
Lee and vice-chairman Albert Ho Chun-yan earlier wrote a letter to the public, saying that disbanding the alliance is the best possible solution in the moment. Yet vice-chairwoman Tonyee Chow Hang-tung wrote another later, urging members not to do so, saying it would do no good at all.
The alliance alongside its key leaders who are now in prison were charged with inciting subversion.
