Equal Opportunities Commission Chairperson Calls for Amendment to Race Discrimination Ordinance
Ricky Chu Man-kin, the chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission, said that making a joke without taking actual actions may constitute racial harassment.
He added that this excuse would not hold up in court, and that the main principle of the Race Discrimination Ordinance is about adding conditions that disfavor people from different cultures or lead them to be ill-treated.
Chu also proposed that the government amend the Ordinance to include same-race discrimination.
He noted that the commission has contacted the government and the Legislative Council multiple times, but they have yet to reach a mutual agreement.
