John Lee experiences new TKO-LT tunnel ahead of opening day, wishes citizens more family time
Chief executive John Lee Ka-chiu said he was excited to see the completion of a new tunnel that can better convenience citizens’ daily transportation as he inspected the Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel on Saturday, a day before it commences service.
Lee was among a number of government officials who hosted today’s commencement ceremony and said he was glad to see the tunnel further perfecting the city’s transport network.
“The TKO-LT Tunnel and the Cross Bay Link are two roads that citizens can use free of charge. As the new roads commence services, citizens can save up to 20 minutes when traveling between Lohas Park and Kwun Tong town center,” Lee said.
“Citizens living in Tseung Kwan O can leave for work later and arrive at their homes sooner, having more time to be with their families,” he added.
Lee first inspected the 2.2 kilometers-long tunnel and attended a briefing session by the Director of Civil Engineering and Development, Michael Fong Hok-shing, before he and other officials took the bus to travel through the tunnel and reached the Cross Bay Link.
“The design is very heartwarming. Citizens can have little walks and come cycling here and enjoy the views,” Lee said as he enthusiastically praised the 1.8 kilometers-long Cross Bay Link – the city’s first-ever bridge coupled with driving lanes, sidewalks, and cycling lanes.
The Hong Kong leader also noted that a total of 12 primary roads or highways have been built since the handover in 1997, and the SAR government will continue to further push forward other transportation infrastructures.
Starting from next Monday (Dec 12), five new bus routes will use the new tunnel during peak hours, and some of the existing buses will also switch their routes to use the new tunnel in the next phase.
