Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu arrived in Chongqing on Wednesday and began a three-day visit to the city.
Lee and his delegation visited the Chongqing International Finance Square, a development project with investment from Hong Kong enterprises, upon arrival in the afternoon.
Lee noted that Hong Kong is Chongqing's largest source of external investment, with more than 3,400 Hong Kong investment projects, and he was pleased with the active participation of Hong Kong enterprises in Chongqing's development.
He also met with Hong Kong people and representatives of Hong Kong enterprises in Chongqing and thanked them for paving the way for cooperation between the two places.
With the establishment of a Hong Kong-Chongqing cooperation mechanism, he hopes Hong Kong youths could fully leverage the new opportunities brought by the two cities to promote economic, trade and cultural exchanges.
Lee will attend the High-Level Meeting cum First Plenary Session of the Hong Kong/Chongqing Cooperation Conference on Thursday.
