More than 261,600 people are now jobless as the unemployment rate for the three months ending February reached 7.2 percent, the highest in 17 years.
According to the latest labor force statistics released by the Census and Statistics Department today, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 7.0 percent in November 2020 to January 2021 to 7.2 percent in December 2020 to February 2021.
The underemployment rate has also increased to 4.0 percent from 3.8 percent.
Both numbers have set a new 17-year high.
As for the number of unemployed persons, the sum has increased by around 8,300, while the number of underemployed persons also increased by around 6,400.
“The unemployment situation in most sectors deteriorated, particularly in import and export trade, postal and courier activities, education, and arts, entertainment and recreation," said labor and welfare secretary Law Chi-kwong.
He also added that the increases in underemployment rate were mainly seen in the retail sector, food and beverage service activities sector, and arts, entertainment and recreation sector.
