Jailed teen fugitive among 12 caught in Taiwan flee bid granted bail awaiting sentence appeal

A teenage fugitive jailed after a failed Taiwan flee bid was granted bail on Wednesday while awaiting an appeal against his sentence in his 2019 protest-related case.
Liu Tsz-man, 19, was previously handed a prison term of two years and seven months for obstructing criminal justice by attempting to flee to Taiwan and possessing articles with intent to damage or destroy property by keeping 22 semi-finished petrol bombs and other dangerous items.

Liu appeared before appeal court judge Derek Pang Wai-cheong this morning and was granted HK$20,000 cash bail. His conditions included reporting to the police station three times a week, handing over his travel documents, and staying at his provided address.

The teenager was in July sentenced to 10 months for his charge of obstructing criminal justice and another 27 months for possessing articles with intent to damage or destroy property. His total prison time came to 31 months, with part of the sentences running concurrently.

His bail application pending an appeal against the 27-month prison term was denied by Pang in August.
