Peoples can now get a sneak peek into the animation house behind the Toy Story series and Inside Out, as the four-month Science Behind Pixar exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui opens today.
Visitors can get a hands-on experience of the whole filmmaking pipeline, which consists of eight sessions, including modeling, rigging frameworks, adding surfaces to objects, sets and cameras, animation, simulation, lighting and rendering.

Every Pixar movie takes years to produce. Over 50 interactive exhibits, which include videos and models, explain how staff from the Pixar Animation Studio solved the problems encountered, such as how to make the Little Green Mens' space suits look realistic and why staff invented a new program just for Princess Merida's curly hair.

"There are a lot of exhibits that I love so much. It's hard for me to pick one," said Paulina Chan Shuk-man, the director of the Science Museum.

Chan said at one exhibit, visitors can try building three-dimensional models by pulling handles representing x, y and z-axes. She said she is proud of her team for presenting the complicated concepts so well.

The exhibition has come to its 16th stop since its first appearance at the Science Museum of Boston in 2015. Chan said the idea of holding a Pixar exhibition came to her in 2011, when the Cultural Museum organized the Pixar 25th anniversary exhibition.

Due to Covid-19, Chan said the team went through various difficulties during the preparation stage.

"The transport arrangements had been suspended once already - we were so afraid the exhibits wouldn't be shipped to Hong Kong," she said.

All exhibits have been sanitized with antimicrobial coating, and regular disinfection will be conducted.

Visitors will also need to make a booking in advance through the museum's e-booking system. The system opened at 2pm yesterday, and visitors can make reservations up to seven days in advance.

Visitors must show the QR code on the confirmation e-mail on arrival. The number of entrants are limited to around 300 per hour, while those who are late and walk-ins will not be entertained.

The exhibition ends on December 1. Its opening hours are 10am to 7pm on weekdays except Thursday, and 10am to 9pm on weekends and public holidays.
