Inside job? Cop arrested over burglary in East Kowloon HQ changing room
A 28-year-old police officer was arrested for theft on Wednesday over a burglary where 17 lockers in a police station changing room were opened, and the personal belongings inside were stolen.
Police confirmed that the arrested officer is remanded in custody and will be suspended from duty.
The arrested officer was posted to the East Kowloon police tactical unit and had access to the men's changing room, sources said.
The burglary occurred on the evening of July 3 at the Kowloon East Regional Headquarters in Ngau Tau Kok.
An officer surnamed Wong headed to the changing room on 11/F after completing his shift around 11pm and found that door to his locker was ajar, and the lock was forced open upon closer examination. He estimated around HK$1,650 in cash and other personal belongings were lost and immediately reported to his superior.
After a preliminary investigation, police found that a total of 17 lockers were opened, and 10 of them were forced open. The case was then handled by the East Kowloon regional crime squad.
It is understood that multiple units are located on the 11/F, including police tactical unit, weapon training division, crime wing, railway district, and railway response team.
Sources added police are still investigating the whereabouts of the stolen personal belongings.
