The government announced on Monday that the implementation date of HKeToll, a free-flow tolling service, will be postponed from February 26 to May 7 at the Tsing Sha Control Area to spare time for citizens to apply for the service.
According to a spokesperson of the Transport Department, HKeToll will replace all manual toll booths and Autotoll lanes, allowing commuters crossing Eagle Nest Tunnel, Sha Tin Heights Tunnel, and Tai Wai Tunnel be able to pay tunnel tolls using toll tags without having to stop or queue for payments.
"More than 20 consultation counters will be set across the city for motorists to apply for HKeToll services and get the information in detail," said the spokesperson. The counters will commence services this month.
Besides, letters will be issued to around 800,000 registered vehicle owners to inform them to make an application as soon as possible for HKeToll services.
As of noon on Monday, more than 430,000 vehicle tags were issued, the spokesperson added.
The Transport Department will extend the HKeToll services to all government-tolled tunnels in phases within the year.
