HSBC Closes Bank Accounts of Hong Kong Opposition Group, Sparking Outrage
HSBC has closed the bank accounts of the League of Social Democrats, an opposition group in Hong Kong, causing outrage within the organisation.
According to four core members of the group, they have also had their personal accounts at several banks closed, as well as three business accounts at HSBC.
The vice-chairman of the League of Social Democrats has expressed concern that the intimidation has reached the personal lives of activists.
It is not clear why HSBC closed the accounts of the League of Social Democrats, but the move has been criticised as a form of intimidation and a violation of the group's freedom of speech and assembly.
The closure of bank accounts is a common tactic used by governments and powerful entities to silence opposition voices and restrict their ability to operate financially.
The League of Social Democrats has called on HSBC to reopen the accounts and apologise for the closure.
HSBC has not yet responded to the organisation's request.
