Housing authority staffer charged with corruption for taking HK$90,000 in bribes
A supervisor of the Housing Department was on Tuesday charged by ICAC for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes and loans totaling over HK$90,000 from six employees of three subcontractors of a public housing construction site in Tai Po.
Wong To, the 30-year-old housing authority employee, faces 15 charges, including 10 for public servants accepting or soliciting an advantage and five for prescribed officers accepting or soliciting an advantage.
According to ICAC, Wong was posted as a supervisor to monitor the quality and progress of the construction of a public housing construction site in Tai Po between January 2021 and last April.
During his work, Wong solicited and accepted two bribes totaling HK$2,500 offered by Lee Pang-kin, a bar-bending supervisor of a construction sub-contractor, for showing him favor during the inspection of the construction works.
Wong further asked for HK$44,300 in six bribes from Lee and two other bar-benders but was rejected by the three.
In addition, Wong solicited and accepted three loans from Lam Wai-kit, a foreman of another sub-contractor at the construction site to show favor to the latter during Wong’s inspection. The loans amounted to HK$25,500.
Wong was also accused of asking for and receiving a total of HK$13,000 in loans from an iron works employee and soliciting HK$6,000 from a cement sand mortar foreman but was rejected.
Wong, Lee, and Lam were detained and released on bail pending their appearance at the Shatin Magistrates’ Courts for their plea on Thursday.
