Hongkongers produce more solid waste as epidemic alleviated
Hong Kong's annual solid waste reached 5.67 million last year, including 4.15 million municipal disposals, according to the environment authority.
In a research report published by the Environmental Protection Department, the average daily quantity of solid waste disposed of at the landfills was 15,533 tonnes per day, which has increased by 5.4 percent compared to 2020.
Besides, in 2021, the quantity of municipal solid waste - including domestic, commercial and industrial waste - was 4.15 million, representing an increase of 5.1 percent.
The quantity of domestic waste, the primary component of municipal waste, was 2.55 million tonnes in 2021, increasing by 2.2 percent compared to 2020.
The quantity of commercial and industrial waste disposed of was 1.59 million tonnes last year, which has increased by 10.1 percent.
"The statistics mainly reflected the increase in commercial and industrial activities along the receding local epidemic," said the Department.
However, for municipal solid waste, a total of 1.84 million tonnes were recycled last year, marking a recycling rate of 31 percent. Of these, 85 percent were delivered outside Hong Kong for recycling and 15 percent were recycled locally.
