Hong Kong will continue to leverage institutional advantages brought by common law, says John Lee
Hong Kong will continue to leverage the institutional advantages of the common law system, said city leader John Lee Ka-chiu, as he met China’s Minister of Justice on Saturday before leaving Beijing.
Lee and Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai were greeted by Minister of Justice He Rong and Vice Minister Liu Zhiqiang in today’s meeting.
Ms. He said that the Ministry of Justice looks forward to exchanging views with Hong Kong on legal exchange and collaboration between the mainland and the SAR, as well as legal services and safeguards in developing the rule of law of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Meanwhile, Lee expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Justice for its continuous support of the work of the SAR government.
Lee noted that Hong Kong will consolidate the city’s position as an international center for legal and dispute resolution services in the Asia-Pacific region, as set out in the National 14th Five-Year Plan, through its global connections.
Lee added his cabinet will also fully support and cooperate with the International Organization for Mediation Preparatory Office, set up in Hong Kong last month, to support the country in developing international mediation and nurturing talents in the practice of foreign-related legal affairs.
In concluding his trip to Beijing, Lee said that it was his first time attending the opening and closing meetings of the National People's Congress in the capacity of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
Lee expressed his gratitude to all central ministries and institutions for their warm hospitality and to the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council for its strong support and coordination of his visit to Beijing.
