Hong Kong to open ‘community living rooms’ for children living in subdivided flats
Project will provide shared space for cooking, eating, exercising and completing homework, welfare chief Chris Sun says.
Hong Kong children living in subdivided flats will be able to do homework, eat and shower in “community living rooms” authorities plan to introduce, but members of the welfare sector warn the initiative may only have limited benefits and the focus should remain on boosting the housing supply.
The shared spaces, to be managed by non-government organisations in districts with a high concentration of subdivided homes, would be free for the children to use, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han on Saturday said.
“We hope it can reduce the time they spend in subdivided flats,” he told a radio programme. “Ideally, the children can go back home after they finish their homework, dinner and shower. They only need to spend a limited time in their subdivided flats.”
