Hong Kong sees 5,387 Covid-19 cases and 12 more deaths

Hong Kong logged 5,387 Covid-19 cases on Friday, including 552 from schools, and added 12 more related deaths.
Among the new infections, 5,231 were locally transmitted, and the other 156 were imported from overseas.

On the other hand, the Hospital Authority reported 12 deaths, involving nine men and three women aged 45 to 93. Four of the deceased patients had yet to receive the booster jab.

The Centre for Health Protection was informed of 552 positive cases from 391 schools throughout the city, including 471 students and 81 teachers and staff members.

A total of 264 schools reported two infections or more over the last week, and the CHP suspended 13 classes from 12 schools for a week.

Six elderly homes also saw eight residents contract Covid, and 25 other residents were ordered to undergo quarantine.

The HA added services of four general clinics will resume starting tomorrow (Sat), and that of eight designated Covid clinics and remote medical consultation services will remain normal.

The latest analysis showed the Omicron subvariant BA.5 now makes up about 80 percent of the overall cases, followed by BA.4 at 6.6 percent. The BA.2.12.1 subvariant, dominant during the summer, accounts for about 11 percent.

Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 2,228 patients. Among them, 45 are in critical condition, including 15 under hospital intensive care, and 34 are in serious condition.
