Takery Limited, the primary taxi meter provider in Hong Kong, announced on Friday that it would go out of business by year-end.
Takery Limited installs and maintains taxi meters in approximately 70 percent of the taxis in Hong Kong. It is understood around 13,000 taxis in the city still use its services.
In a letter, the company said the decision came after considering the owner’s age, adding that the firm is having difficulties maintaining its operation due to staff shortage and
Covid.
It also noted that they cannot provide new taxi meters for drivers for a certain period due to a chip shortage.
Separately, the letter wrote that the company will only provide maintenance services until year-end as their workshop situated inside a car park has been fined by authorities for violating the law.
