Hong Kong protesters go on violent rampage over government’s new anti-mask law
Hong Kong protesters reacted with anger to the government’s introduction of a new anti-mask law on October 4, 2019, blocking roads and vandalising rail stations as well as businesses owned by companies which have voiced opposition to demonstrations.
A teenage boy was shot in Yuen Long after a plain-clothes policeman opened fire while being attacked.
Invoking a tough, colonial-era emergency law that has not been used in more than half a century, Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced that the ban would go into force at midnight the same day.
Aiming to quell nearly four months of civil unrest in the city, had Lam convened an Executive Council meeting with her ministers and advisers.
