The bill would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong's residents to mainland China for trials and triggered weeks of protests, which evolved into a movement with wider grievances against the Hong Kong administration.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive pledged her support to the Independent Police Complaints Council, set up to investigate police actions during the protests, which was one of the primary alleged grievances motivating activists.
