Thousands of people gathered outside a police station near the Prince Edward Mass Transit Railway station in Hong Kong on Friday, to demand the release of CCTV footage from the station taken on the night of August 31, where protesters allege police beat and even killed a protester.
Protesters mourned the alleged victims of the police assault by laying flowers and burning incense outside the station. Riot police were also at the scene firing projectiles at protesters as they burned debris and protected themselves with umbrellas.
Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam announced the extradition bill that sparked the protests formally withdrawn on Wednesday, and Lam assured there would be no further discussion or vote on it. The bill would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong's residents to mainland China for trials and triggered weeks of protests, which evolved into a movement with wider grievances against the Hong Kong administration.
Hong Kong's Chief Executive pledged her support to the Independent Police Complaints Council, set up to investigate police actions during the protests, which was one of the primary alleged grievances motivating activists.
