The police chief of Hong Kong, Siu Chak-yee, announced that the city has seen a significant increase of over 10,000 crime cases in the first five months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.
The overall detection rate was 25.2%.
The increase in crime cases is mainly due to an increase in fraud and traditional crime cases.
The police officer noted that the strict social distancing measures during the
COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the decrease in crime rate last year, but as the situation improved, social interactions gradually returned to pre-pandemic levels, leading to an increase in common crime cases like robbery, burglary, and theft.
The figure for common crime cases in the first five months of 2022 was lower than pre-pandemic levels, with only theft and extortion cases showing a significant increase.
