Hong Kong Launches Successful Food Waste Collection Trial Scheme in Public Rental Housing Estates
A food waste collection trial scheme was launched by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) in public rental housing estates in Hong Kong.
Over 40% of residents used the smart recycling bins and over 400 tonnes of food waste were collected in the first six months.
The scheme aims to encourage food waste source separation, collection and recycling to mitigate environmental hygiene problems and reduce the burden on landfills.
Residents can earn GREEN$ for recyclables and redeem gifts including daily necessities and groceries, as well as environmentally friendly products.
The collection network has expanded to three other housing estates and the short-term target is to cover about 100 blocks of public rental housing estates in 2023/24.
The collected food waste is converted into energy and compost at the Organic Resource Recovery Centre at Siu Ho Wan.
