Hong Kong expects 600,000 mainland tourists during Labour Day holidays
About 600,000 mainland tourists will be visiting Hong Kong during the Labour Day Golden Week, making up about 60 percent of pre-Covid levels, according to the Travel Industry Council.
The council said they are mostly independent tourists, and guided tours will only take up a very small portion, similar to about 200 tours during the weekends at present.
It is also believed this coming Sunday (Apr 30) will see the number of inbound travelers peak at around 200,000 on a single day.
Fanny Yeung Shuk-fan, executive director of the council, said the Tourism Commission had convened an inter-department meeting with authorities and the industry to mull relevant arrangements ahead of the Golden Week.
Most tours will enter the city through the Heung Yuen Wai border point as authorities conducted on-site inspection and testing last weekend to enhance cross-border arrangements, Yeung said.
Meanwhile, sources said the number of parking spaces would increase from nine to tens of dozens. The area for queuing will also be extended to the first floor of the border point facility if too many people are crossing the border simultaneously.
An Inter-departmental Joint Command Centre will also be set up by the Immigration Department, the Police, the Customs and Excise Department and other relevant departments during the Labour Day Golden Week period to monitor the situation at each land control point, as well as to coordinate with mainland counterparts to cope with the passenger flow.
