Hong Kong education sector lost its most representative organization
Confederations of Trade Unions said that Hong Kong education sector lost the most representative organization speaking up for teachers' rights, after Professional Teachers' Union announced its disbandment after 48 years.
Professional Teachers' Union was part of CTU, but announced its withdrawal on August 4.
The CTU said that the teachers' union has recently been under heavy political pressure – so much that it has no choice but dissolve.
"Shrinking freedom and fear in society will deal a blow to trade unionism," CTU said.
Hong Kong Journalists Association expressed great distress to lose PTU, saying the union has been playing an important role in trade unionism over the years and was committed to supporting other trade unions.
HKJA believed that trade unions play an essential role in defending the rights of corresponding industries, and will insist on continuing operations.
