Hong Kong doctors issue urgent appeal for donors as 4-month-old baby girl waits for heart transplant
Doctors at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital made an urgent appeal on Friday for a heart donation to save the life of a 4-month-old girl whose own organ is failing.
The hospital said the baby girl Lai Tsz-hei is suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and is currently in critical condition and continued to require a ventilator and cardiotonic medicine.
It said the heart must be retrieved from a brain dead organ donor who was healthy and weighed under 13 kilograms.
Doctors said the baby girl needed to undergo a transplant as soon as possible, and should the transplant turns out to be a successful one, there is an 80 percent chance that the girl could live for another five years or more.
