Hong Kong Customs seizes HK$2m counterfeit Central America-bound goods
Hong Kong Customs has seized some 21,000 counterfeit products destined for Belize in Central America in an inspection at the Kwai Chung Customhouse Cargo Examination Compound.
Through risk assessment, Customs officers on April 1 inspected a 40-foot container arriving in Hong Kong from Nansha, Guangdong, destined for Belize, Central America.
Upon inspection, the suspected counterfeit, and smuggled goods with an estimated street value of about HK$2 million were seized, including handbags, hats, shoes, sunglasses, and fashion accessories.
A Customs spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing.
Under Hong Kong’s Trade Descriptions Ordinance, anyone who imports or exports goods with a forged trademark commits an offense. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of HK$500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
Meanwhile, under the Import and Export Ordinance, anyone found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of HK$2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
