Dean of the faculty of medicine at Chinese University, Francis Chan Ka-leung, said Hong Kong could see its daily Covid caseload climbing back up to five-digit levels in the foreseeable future, after the city reported over 4,000 cases on Saturday.
Health authorities have earlier voiced concerns over the possible burden on the public health system as the city's daily
coronavirus tally exceeded the 4,000-mark for three consecutive days.
Speaking on a radio program on Sunday morning, Chan said beds at public hospitals should be reserved for patients with severe complications from the infection.
He also appealed to members of the public to get their booster shots.
"The numbers are steadily increasing, so I won't feel surprised if the daily new cases are above 10,000 a day. For public hospitals, we have limited number of beds, so we can only cater for those with more severe illnesses or those with complications," he said.
"Therefore, I emphasize that we need to put a lot of preventive measures in terms of receiving booster injections and those who haven't completed the vaccination to receive the vaccination as soon as possible."
Chan added that the CUHK Medical Centre has special wards in place to help health authorities take in
Covid patients anytime.
Meanwhile, he warned that people who recover from the infection might develop long
Covid, and that his university is carrying out a study on the matter to help the government better plan its healthcare services accordingly.
