Hong Kong Building Inspection: Over 1,000 Buildings Require Urgent Repairs
In a statement made on Sunday, Secretary for Development Bernadette Linn Hon-ho revealed that nearly 1,000 buildings across Hong Kong require urgent repairs.
This announcement comes after several incidents of concrete falling from buildings in the city.
Linn stated that the Building Department (BD) will step up its enforcement efforts and provide support to building owners in emergency situations to ensure timely repairs.
The BD will carry out the necessary rectification works before recovering the costs from the building owners.
According to Linn, approximately 2,700 buildings have expired mandatory building inspection notices that have not been complied with.
Of these, owners of 1,800 properties have appointed inspectors to check the buildings.
For the remaining 900 buildings, the BD will issue warning letters.
If the building owners do not commence repair works as soon as possible, the department will consider initiating prosecution at the end of this year.
Linn emphasized that the BD will strengthen cooperation with the Home Affairs Department and the Urban Renewal Authority to assist building owners with a more systematic maintenance program and share information among departments and institutions.
The BD will also consider providing an online platform for building owners to submit reports and track the progress of their building's repairs.
These measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens in Hong Kong.
The BD urges building owners to take immediate action to repair any identified defects and to prioritize the safety of their tenants and the general public.
