Hong Kong Airport sees 2 million passengers in Jan, showing a 28 times growth
The number of people passing through Hong Kong International Airport has recorded 2.1 million last month, marking a year-on-year surge of around 28 times, the Airport Authority announced on Sunday.
Hong Kong International Airport handled over 80,000 passengers daily at peak, representing around 40% of pre-pandemic levels, said the Authority. "Flight movements saw a year-on-year increase of 34.9% to 16,215."
All categories of visitors in Hong Kong have witnessed the numbers climb as travel restrictions eased. Travelers to and from Southeast Asia and Japan recorded the most significant increases.
The Lunar New Year holiday brought strong performance recovery in traffic numbers during the second half of January this year, as well as the roaring demand for traveling under the reopening of the boundary between China and Hong Kong, the Authority noted.
"On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume increased year on year by 466.0% to 7.6 million."
However, the Authority said the performance for cargo is still seeing continuous decreases under the effect of the downturn in the global economic outlook, with cargo throughput dropped 26.4% to 288,000 tonnes compared to the same month last year.
