HKU student union deplores university cutting off services to union
The student union of the University of Hong Kong deplored the school cutting ties with the union, including reasserting control over the union’s facilities and withdrawing its access to financial services.
This came after the school singled the union out for spreading “political propaganda” and repeatedly making groundless accusations against the university.
In the most recent incident on April 16, the union accused the school of “bending over to the wolves of tyranny” and “giving up institutional autonomy in an open letter to president Xiang Zhang.
The union said the school should have thought twice about the decision, saying it had a far-reaching impact on students, in addition to wrecking the trust between students and staff members.
“Even though the union is not attached to the school, both parties have maintained a close and equal partnership over the years,” the union said.
“It is hoped that the school can collaborate and communicate with students to weather the storm...Cutting ties with students is not the act of a civilized educator.”
